Major July 2027 Festivals Explained

Ashadha Amavasya – 3 and 4 July

The new moon of Ashadha Krishna Paksha is spread over two days this time. Saturday, 3 July is marked as Pitrukarya Amavasya and Sunday, 4 July as Devkarya Amavasya.

Why two days? Amavasya begins around midday on the first day, which suits the afternoon rites for ancestors, and it is present at sunrise on the second, which suits snan, daan and puja. In Amanta regions this Amavasya closes Jyeshtha, not Ashadha.

Gupt Navratri also begins on the Sunday, since Shukla Pratipada starts that same morning. It is a quiet Navratri, traditionally kept with Durga path and a simple diya at home.

Jagannath Rath Yatra – 5 July

Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya falls on Monday, 5 July, and that is the day of Rath Yatra. Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are traditionally taken out on large wooden chariots pulled by devotees.

The biggest celebration is on the eastern coast, though smaller chariot processions are held in many towns. At home, people often offer khichdi or a sweet as bhog and watch the procession together.

Devshayani Ekadashi – 14 July

This is the Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, on Wednesday, 14 July. Traditionally, Lord Vishnu is believed to go into yogic sleep from this day, and the four months of Chaturmas begin.

Weddings and other big ceremonies are generally paused during Chaturmas. The Panchang shows marriage Muhurats from 8 to 14 July, so the week before this Ekadashi tends to be busy with weddings.

One date is given for all traditions. For the Parana time on the following morning, check a local Panchang.

Guru Purnima – 18 July

The full moon of Ashadha falls on Sunday, 18 July. Purnima Tithi lasts till late evening, so the vrat, Vyas Puja and snan-daan all fall on the same day.

Many people visit their guru or teacher with fruit, flowers and a small gift. Those without a guru traditionally offer respects to Maharishi Ved Vyas, to elders or to a sacred book at home. Kokila Vrat also begins on this day, according to regional custom.

Start of Shravan and First Sawan Somvar – 19 July

Shravan opens on Monday, 19 July in the Purnimanta system, and the very first day is a Sawan Somvar. A second Somvar follows a week later.

For regions on the Amanta system, the month is still Ashadha at this point, and their Shravan begins only after the next Amavasya. The Monday vrat dates are the same everywhere; only the month count differs.

By now the rains have usually set in. In many homes, leafy greens and brinjal are dropped from the kitchen for the month and a small Shivling is set up for daily jal.

Kamika Ekadashi – 29 and 30 July

Shravan Krishna Ekadashi carries two dates. Smartas keep it on Thursday, 29 July, and Vaishnavas on Friday, 30 July.

Dashami is still present at sunrise on the first day, and Ekadashi starts only after that. Vaishnavas avoid an Ekadashi touched by Dashami, so they fast a day later. If you are unsure which one applies at home, follow the temple or sampradaya you usually go by.

Sawan Shivratri – 31 July

The month closes with Sawan Shivratri on Saturday, 31 July, and Pradosh Vrat falls on the same day. Trayodashi is present at sunrise and lasts till late evening, with Chaturdashi taking over at night.

Traditionally, devotees offer water on the Shivling on this day, and many carry it from a river on foot. Temples stay crowded till late, so those going with children or elders may prefer the early morning hours. For the night puja timings in your city, check a local Panchang.

Vrat Rules, Food and Precautions for July 2027

Fasting customs change from home to home and from one sampradaya to another, so treat this as a general guide. Most vrats in the जुलाई हिंदू कैलेंडर 2027 come with the monsoon, when digestion is traditionally considered slower and light food is preferred.

Commonly chosen vrat foods:

  • Seasonal fruit such as banana, pear and apple
  • Milk, curd, makhana and soaked nuts
  • Sabudana khichdi, kuttu or singhara atta puris, boiled potato
  • Sendha namak in place of ordinary salt
  • Lemon water, coconut water or thin chaas

Foods traditionally avoided:

  • Rice, wheat and other grains on Ekadashi
  • Pulses and beans on Ekadashi
  • Onion and garlic on vrat days
  • Ordinary salt on a phalahar vrat, and all salt during Jaya Parvati Vrat in some regions
  • Leafy greens through Shravan, in many homes

Practical precautions:

  • Drink boiled or filtered water, since stomach infections are common in the rains.
  • Eat freshly cooked food and avoid cut fruit from open stalls.
  • Children, pregnant women, older adults and people on regular medicines may keep a lighter vrat or consult their doctor first.
  • Keep diyas away from damp walls, curtains and drying clothes.
  • Wipe wet floors around the puja place after offering jal, to avoid slipping.
  • Wear footwear with grip for temple visits on rainy days.
  • Put used flowers and bel patra in soil or a compost pit, not in drains.

This Ekadashi is kept for Lord Vishnu, and many people also take a small Chaturmas vow on it, such as giving up one food item.
