Major August 2027 Festivals Explained

Hariyali Amavasya and Somvati Amavasya – 2 August

The month opens with the Amavasya of Shravan Krishna Paksha on Monday, 2 August. Since it lands on a Monday, it is counted as Somvati Amavasya too, and it is also the third Sawan Somvar.

Hariyali simply means greenery. Traditionally, people plant a sapling such as tulsi, neem or peepal on this day, offer water to a peepal tree and do tarpan for ancestors. In regions that follow the Amanta system, this same Amavasya closes Ashadha instead of Shravan.

A Surya Grahan is listed on this date. For visibility in your city and any Sutak timings, check a local Panchang.

Hariyali Teej – 4 August

Two days after the new moon comes Teej, on Shravan Shukla Tritiya, Wednesday, 4 August. Dwitiya ends in the morning that day and Tritiya follows, which is why the two Tithis appear together in the Panchang.

Women traditionally keep this vrat for Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Green bangles, mehndi, swings tied to tree branches and monsoon sweets like ghewar are the familiar signs of the day in many northern homes.

Sindhara falls a day earlier. According to regional custom, married daughters receive sweets, clothes and bangles from their parental home on that day.

Nag Panchami – 6 August

Shravan Shukla Panchami falls on Friday, 6 August, and it is kept as Nag Panchami. Takshak Puja is listed alongside it.

In many homes, a figure of the serpent deity is drawn near the doorway or worshipped at a temple with milk, haldi, flowers and durva. Some communities traditionally avoid digging the soil on this day, and some keep it on a different Panchami, so follow the custom at home.

Pavitra Ekadashi – 12 August

The Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Shravan arrives on Thursday, 12 August. Many Panchangs also call it Putrada Ekadashi, and it is traditionally kept with prayers to Lord Vishnu for the well-being of children.

Only one date is shown for this vrat, so Smarta and Vaishnava devotees keep it together. The vrat is opened the next morning on Dwadashi. For the exact Parana time, check a local Panchang.

Raksha Bandhan and Shravan Purnima – 17 August

Rakhi is on Tuesday, 17 August, the day Purnima is present at sunrise. The Purnima Tithi is shown ending at 12:57 in the afternoon, so many people will prefer to tie the rakhi in the morning. For Bhadra timings, check a local Panchang.

The Purnima Vrat is listed a day earlier, on Monday, 16 August, because the full-moon Tithi begins that morning and is present at night. That Monday is also the fifth and last Sawan Somvar.

Quite a lot ends and begins on Rakhi day. Shravan closes, Kokila Vrat concludes, Simha Sankranti falls and Sanskrit Diwas is observed.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami – 24 and 25 August

Janmashtami falls on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami in the Purnimanta system, which Amanta regions call Shravan Krishna Ashtami. Two dates are given: Tuesday, 24 August for Smartas and Wednesday, 25 August for Vaishnavas.

The reason is simple. Ashtami begins on the first evening and is present at midnight, which Smartas follow, while Vaishnavas keep the day on which Ashtami is present at sunrise.

Homes and temples traditionally decorate a jhula for Bal Gopal, and the vrat is opened after the midnight puja. For the midnight puja time in your city, check a local Panchang.

Aja Ekadashi – 28 August

The Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Bhadrapada is Aja Ekadashi, on Saturday, 28 August. A single date is shown for all traditions.

After it, the month winds down quickly with Pradosh, Masik Shivratri and then Kushagrahani Amavasya on the last day. Traditionally, kusha grass for the coming year’s rituals is gathered on that Amavasya, and it is also kept as Pithori Amavasya.

Vrat Rules, Food and Precautions for August 2027

Fasting rules are never identical from one home to the next, and each sampradaya has its own way. Most vrats in the अगस्त हिंदू कैलेंडर 2027 fall in the rainy season, so light, freshly cooked food suits the month. Follow what is practised at home and treat the lists below as a general guide.

Commonly chosen vrat foods:

  • Seasonal fruit, milk, curd and makhana
  • Sabudana khichdi, kuttu or singhara atta rotis, boiled potato or arbi
  • Sendha namak in place of ordinary salt
  • Coconut water, lemon water or thin chaas through the day
  • Makhan-mishri and panjiri on Janmashtami

Foods traditionally avoided:

  • Rice, wheat and other grains on Ekadashi
  • Pulses and beans on Ekadashi
  • Onion and garlic on most vrat days
  • Ordinary salt on a phalahar vrat
  • Leafy greens in Shravan and curd in Bhadrapada, in many homes

Practical precautions:

  • Drink enough water, because humid weather is tiring on an empty stomach.
  • Cook fresh and avoid cut fruit left in the open, since food spoils quickly in the monsoon.
  • Children, pregnant women, older adults and anyone on regular medicines may keep a lighter vrat or consult their doctor first.
  • Keep diyas on a steady surface, away from curtains, rakhi threads and jhula decorations.
  • Do not offer milk to live snakes on Nag Panchami. A picture or idol is used instead.
  • Never look at a solar eclipse with bare eyes.
  • Place used flowers and puja material in soil or a compost pit instead of a drain or river.
